During the second quarter of 2014 Malta’s tourism sector continued to report improvements over the same period last year on most key performance indicator in line with the trends recorded in 2013. All sectors reported increases in their gross operating profits.
In the 5-star sector, the Gross Operating Profit per Available Room (GOPAR) increased by 11.8% primarily as a result of improved rates and occupancy notwithstanding an increase in cost base.
At +16.8%, the most notable improvement in GOPAR was reported by the 4-star category. In addition to the growth in average achieved room rates (+7.1%) and occupancy levels (+5.4%), the 4-star sector also reported a increase in non-accommodation income per occupied room of +5.0%.
The 3-star sector also recorded a strong increase in GOPAR (+11.8%) as a result of improved occupancy (+5.6%), a marginal improvement in rates (+0/3%) and a relatively low increase in cost base.
